What is Black Love Day

By Shamika Sledge

January 16,2021

February is one of the most celebrated months of the year, second to December. This month is jammed packed with holidays like Valentine's Day, Black History Month, Singles Awareness month, Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday, Random Acts of kindness day, Groundhog day and the list literally goes on. So needless to say this should easily be one the happiest months of the year!

Black love Day February 13, is the 3rd Nationally commemorated African-American holiday to date, (wholyday) which we will demonstrate this Love through 5 tenets or loving acts:

Love for- The creator, yourself, the black family, black community & black race.

We have an entire 24 hours to show love to and with all 5 categories. Others not of the melanin family are encouraged to present love in action towards blacks by looking within themselves for how they truly feel and act towards the black community. Rather it's engraved, learned or recently taught, this is a day of reflection of ones self.

Black Love Day was founded in 1993 by Ayo Handy-Kendi. She has rituals of reconnection, reconciliation and conflict resolution that can be used at any time, you can learn more about the rituals in her book by going to www.PositiveEnergyWorks.com

Handy-Kendi is also a well known degreed counselor, village organizer and diversity trainer. To make this even sweeter she has over 50 years of experience in transformative breath practices and holistic healing. Yes the queen doesn't join the table she brings her own dining set and appliance's!

Just like other holidays Black Love Day can be celebrated alone, with family or your beautiful melanin filled spouse. It's whoever you wish to spend such a reflective and abundance of love day with. Go to dinner or cook at home, exchange gifts rather they be bought or made, flowers and wine are always a great start, as well as praying to and thanking the creator for your ancestors, family, health, wealth and life. Keep in mind TheMelaninPride does have sweet gifts and matching merchandise for such a day on TheMelaninPride.com & our Etsy site!

This day may be new to you but with practice comes perfect, make this day as intimate or as lavish as you choose. Whatever you do, celebrate!
